Keeping Shears Sharp

Cutting tools work best when they are kept clean, lubricated and sharp. When sharpening shears made of low-carbon steel, it is important to note that you have to use a fine or medium fine single cut flat file. For shears with hardened steel blades, use a file or small flat sharpening stone.

Here are some guidelines when using a sharpening stone:

  • Disassemble shears and draw a blade across the flat stone one at a time. Follow the angle of the original bevel. Repeat with the second blade.
  • Reassemble shears by making sure to tighten pivot bolt until the blades close with a slight drag. If the bolt has a spring attached, tighten it until best cutting is achieved.
